I am 37 pages into “Becoming Conversant With The Emerging Church” and already annoyed. To define the Emerging Church movement, D. A. Carson has chosen a horrible word: protest. We are protesting our fundamentalist evangelical roots, protesting modernity, and protesting the consumeristic, mega-seeker church phenomena.

I take issue with the word protest, because it seems so juvenile, adolecent, hip, and fadish. It reduces our deep, philosophical problems and groanings with modernity and the modern version of Christianity to trendy morons who beat their chests and wave hand-scripted posterboard signs at anything (click-it, I dare you!) that chaps their ass that morning!

No, we are not protesting, but REACTING. There is a big difference, and I would appreciate it if people who want to critique the movement acknowledge our reaction.

reacting to protest…
