thank you for the thoughts on the question of cessation. I am also taking a systematic theology class and is still unclear as to where I should stand.
The foundational aspect of apostles and NT prophets described in Ephesians 2:20, points to the cessation of prophecies. And in view of 1 Cor 14:20-25, if prophecies have ceased, then tongues have also ceased.
Prophet by definition, is God’s spokesman, and its cessation is evident by the lack of written records or evidence of a single prophet over the past ~2000 years (this is up to debate as well).
I believe inscripturation (textual) have ceased, however, I am not convinced that special revelation has ceased because there is no evidence in the scripture that states that and we ought not to limit God’s power.
By faith, and in the study of Holy Scriptures, may God guide us in the right direction.

Thanks for dropping by novus•lumen and listening to my ramblings and commenting 🙂 Sorry I haven’t responded in a bit, but seminary has squeezed all of time out of my reality!
And YES…I’m a bit ‘unsettled’ in where I stand on revelation, too. On the one hand it makes sense to think that what God desired to communicate to humanity was codified in the Text, and that communication is over with, because what God wanted to say was said…but on the other hand to say that God doesn’t reveal anymore is iffy for me.
