About 45 minutes ago I finished watching a 50 minute “rough cut” DVD called Invisible Children. It is a movie shot about 2 years ago by 3 young guys on an adventure to expose the plight of the Sudanese people. What they discovered, however, changed their lives. Through “chance” encounters, the guys found out about a concerted effort by the Lords Resistant Army (a reactionary movement to tople the government of Uganda) to capture children and force them into their army. The lives of thousands of children are defined by fear, blood, death, machettes, M-16s, slaughter, and mahem.
I cannot put into words right now the impact of this movie…it had a similar effect on me as Hotel Rwanda. Both Hotel and Invisible created novus thoughts and feelings. In the past, I have never been one to feel compelled to act when confronted with social ills; until now, I was content to watch the suffering on the evening news and go right back to stuffing my face full of macaroni, until now.
I’m not sure where watching Invisible tonight will lead me. Who knows, maybe I’ll break out my poster board and paint, create a sign, and set-up shop across the White House or the Capitol Building…
