I’ve since written a review and analysis of the movie in relationship to postmodernity, Michael Foucault, and Christian spirituality. You can find that piece, HERE.
Tonight I am going to see what all the hubbub is about the new movie The Golden Compass. I already know the movie is based on a book written by an atheist named Philip Pullman, which is part of a larger series called His Dark Materials. I already know the main character apparently kills a god character named Yahweh. I already know the institution called Magisterium is supposed to represent the institution of Christianity. So no use in sending me Jimmy Dobsons reasons for not seeing this movie, cause I’m going…and I’m excited!
So why am I going? Why would I spend my time, let alone money, on a movie that seems to be so anti-Christian?
Well aside from the fact I need a break from studying from finals, I love seeing movies like these because it helps me understand how society and culture views God and the Church and the questions it’s asking regarding spirituality. A while ago I wrote a post on the need for Christians to move through life with a bible in one hand an an ipod in the other, to listen to God through the Text of Scripture and the prophets of our day through the media. If we are truly concerned that our culture and individuals within it experience transformation, we need to understand it. When we engage the culture through songs, media, art, movies, etc… we should ask such questions like: How do these pieces reflect the broader currents of culture? What do these songs say about the state of mind of postmodern America? What are her values, fears, hopes, dreams and points of disgust?
So this is why I am going to see The Golden Compass tonight…not to mention I need a break from studying Greek! Hope to see you there 🙂

That is exactly the right attitude to have. For how can someone be of any help unto another if they could not care less about their thoughts and feelings???
Thanks, Jeremy, for modeling an engagement spirituality rather than the predominant fear-driven, avoidance spirituality of so many evangelical nay-sayers about movies like *The Golden Compass.* Because I am so, so afraid that this one tiny movie will destroy my whole faith and undo all my 30 years of pastoral ministry–because we all know Hollywood is more powerful than the Holy Spirit–I am choosing not to see this faith-wrecking film. Let me know what you think because your faith is so much stronger than mine.
Jeremy,
I like and share your attitude. This recurrent trend in Christendom can be frustrating. It sometimes seems that we can be worked into a frenzy by anyone one who dares to look at our faith cross-eyed.
Sean
P.S.
I would love to read any faith oriented reviews you have come across regarding this movie (especially those written by emergent/postmodern thinkers)
YES…we can be worked into a frenzy and I think what irritates me most is how all of these people and issues are turned into boogeymen by Church Inc. for certain agendas. What have we to fear? If Jesus defeated death than SURELY a little movie won’t harm His body!
About a review…I haven’t seen much, though I haven’t surfed this week much given its finals week! But I’m going to write my take on it in a few days, and I hope to include some wisdom from Michael Foucault.
Anyway, thanks for the comment and for swingin by n•l…appreciate!
