For those in the Washington, DC area, I thought I would let you know of a wonderful opportunity to get involved in a movement on behalf of the people of Sudan. From June 12-July 10, Brian McLaren’s church, Cedar Ridge Community Church, and other DC area churches will be coming together at 5 locations over the 5 week period to bring attention to the plight of those suffering in Darfur and other areas in Sudan.

Having attended Brian’s church for the past few months, I know how this sort of developed. Like many Americans around the country, after watching the winter movie Hotel Rwanda he was so gripped by the plight of the Rwanda people and struck by the present-day similarity in Sudan. Not wanting to leave the theatre unchanged, he vowed to God that he would not sit idly by while another Rwanda raged in his lifetime. Thus began the summer movement, a desire not to sit by while Sudan’s children and future is being ravaged.

I must be honest, doing any sort of activism is very novus for me 🙂 This should be good for me to get involved, though. In fact, I have been following the Sudan situation since my Freshman year of college (1998), where I organized a day of awareness and advocacy for Sudan and later established a student organization called Students for Religious Freedom to bring light to the worldwide persecuted church situation. While it isn’t widely reported, this conflict is very much a Christian-Muslim thing. So come out this summer to worship and take a stand for the people of Sudan, especially our brothers and sisters in the community of Christ.
