Because of recent events in the south that are stoking racial fervor throughout the country, I thought I would post a prayer from my recent prayer book for Grand Rapids, PRAYERS FOR MY CITY. It’s a Wednesday afternoon prayer that specifically prays against the toxic disease of racism that still lingers even in Grand Rapids.
Gracious Heavenly Father, who did create every single person of Grand Rapids in your image and likeness, I pray this day against the toxic disease of racism that still lingers in my city: may you convict me of the ways I have participated in racial injustice and the ways my city continues to foster an environment of separation; may you break all strongholds of superiority and destroy the dividing lines of racial separation in Grand Rapids; and may you convict and empower your Church to stand as a model of unity and beacon of hopeful reconciliation; through the might and power of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
